For Josh and Margaret Smith, the word "dovetail" has taken on meanings that they never quite imagined. In 2005, the couple moved to Boulder to launch their studio-based business. They named it Dovetail because their vision was, in effect, to dovetail their talents in drawing, design, screen-printing and ceramics. After setting up a screen-printing studio in a spare bedroom and turning their garage into a ceramics shop, the two went to work turning their ideas into reality. The result has been a collection of handmade tableware complete with their original screen-printed imagery on the surface.
Each dish begins as a thin slab of soft porcelain clay that is then folded into the form of a mug, plate, bowl, vase, etc. The pieces are handled numerous times during the process of creating, glazing, sanding, firing and finally adding their indelible drawings to the surface. The work is lightweight, yet durable enough to use everyday. These pieces, however, are definitely not ordinary dishes: all of the pieces are multi-sided square forms and the imagery includes buildings, hand-drawn letters, skulls with wings and of course, doves.
